While Colorado continues to have a low recycling rate of just 16%, the state is on the verge of significant progress toward reducing waste!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This year\u2019s report not only examines recycling and composting challenges and successes, but also includes \u201cthe three Rs\u201d\u2014reduce, reuse, and recycle<\/strong>\u2014and ways the state, local communities, and entrepreneurial businesses are leading the way toward less waste and fostering a circular economy for Colorado.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:30% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/report-the-state-of-recycling-and-composting-in-colorado-2023\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cover-sorc-2023-791x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20689 size-full lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cover-sorc-2023-791x1024.png 791w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cover-sorc-2023-232x300.png 232w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cover-sorc-2023-768x994.png 768w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cover-sorc-2023-97x125.png 97w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cover-sorc-2023.png 1000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 791px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 791\/1024;\" \/><\/a><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>View the 7th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/executive-summary-the-state-of-recycling-and-composting-in-colorado-2023\/\" data-type=\"resources\" data-id=\"20704\">State of Recycling and Composting in Colorado Report<\/a><\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of innovative ways Coloradans are reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting&nbsp;across the state, forging new pathways toward a Zero Waste future, include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">REDUCE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb21-1162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colorado Plastic Pollution Reduction Act<\/a><strong>, successfully championed by Eco-Cycle, required a 2023 statewide fee on single-use checkout bags<\/strong> that is estimated to reduce between 1.5 and 1.8 billion single-use checkout bags annually. Phase two, starting January 2024, will <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/zero-waste-colorado\/plastic-pollution-reduction-act-overview\/2024-polystyrene-ban\/\">ban polystyrene take-out food containers<\/a> and single-use plastic checkout bags altogether.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aspen city officials reported an <strong>80\u201390% reduction in straws<\/strong> used at restaurants that switched from automatically giving people straws to waiting for a customer to ask.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) has <strong>adopted food waste reduction practices<\/strong> in district food preparation kitchens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">REUSE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two emerging reusable food serviceware businesses operating in Colorado, <a href=\"https:\/\/rworldreuse.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/rworldreuse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">r.World<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deliverzero.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.deliverzero.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DeliverZero<\/a>, <strong>replace disposable take-out containers with washable, reusable delivery containers<\/strong>, avoiding more than 13,000 pounds of waste to landfills, saving over 325,000 gallons of water, and preventing over 46,000 kgCO2e of greenhouse emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Denver launched <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/denvergov.org\/Government\/Agencies-Departments-Offices\/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory\/Climate-Action-Sustainability-Resiliency\/Resources-for-Businesses\/Certifiably-Green-Denver\/Reuse-Denver-Incentives?mc_cid=27130034fe&amp;mc_eid=d8d4c769ee\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/denvergov.org\/Government\/Agencies-Departments-Offices\/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory\/Climate-Action-Sustainability-Resiliency\/Resources-for-Businesses\/Certifiably-Green-Denver\/Reuse-Denver-Incentives?mc_cid=27130034fe&amp;mc_eid=d8d4c769ee\" target=\"_blank\">an incentive program funding 35 local food establishments to switch to reusable serviceware<\/a> for on-site dining, and is offering up to $2,500 to help permitted events transition to reusable cups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Colorado is the only state that has adopted two Right to Repair policies<\/strong>\u2014one for powered wheelchairs and one for agricultural equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RECYCLE &amp; COMPOST<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Colorado was the third state to adopt a nation-leading <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/reducing-plastics\/producer-responsibility-for-plastics\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/reducing-plastics\/producer-responsibility-for-plastics\/\">Producer Responsibility policy<\/a>, co-written by Eco-Cycle, requiring producers of paper and packaging (cans, jars, boxes, etc.) who sell these products in the state to fund recycling services for all Colorado residents starting in 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Colorado also adopted <strong>a nation-leading <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/sb23-253\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTruth in Compostable Labeling\u201d bill<\/a><strong> (SB23-253) to reduce contamination in compost streams<\/strong> by clarifying labeling of certified compostable and look-alike \u201ccompostable\u201d packaging, championed by Eco-Cycle in spring 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read more about groundbreaking actions that the state, local communities, and businesses are taking in our <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/report-the-state-of-recycling-and-composting-in-colorado-2023\/\" data-type=\"resources\" data-id=\"20696\">2023 State of Recycling &amp; Composting Report<\/a> (find the executive summary <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/executive-summary-the-state-of-recycling-and-composting-in-colorado-2023\/\" data-type=\"resources\" data-id=\"20704\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Highlights from our 7th annual State of Recycling and Composting in Colorado Report!
