The report also shows that composting services have diverted food scraps and yard trimmings from landfills and increased support for local businesses.<\/em><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-2d7e5a5e-7fff-105a-e149-e10f90d1ed84\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/SORCBlogHeader2024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23706 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/SORCBlogHeader2024.png 1000w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/SORCBlogHeader2024-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/SORCBlogHeader2024-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/SORCBlogHeader2024-200x100.png 200w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1000\/500;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings from the report include:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Waste has decreased while the population has increased. <\/strong>Total municipal waste generated dropped from 7.1 million tons in 2018 to 6.9 million tons in 2023. In the same timeframe, the state population has increased, and the benefits of recent waste reduction policies have yet to be realized.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Colorado\u2019s recycling and compost rate stubbornly stagnates at 15.5%<\/strong>. Disappointingly, Colorado\u2019s recycling and compost rates remain low. However, the roll-out of curbside recycling for ALL Coloradans in 2026, thanks to a new policy championed by Eco-Cycle and partners, is expected to increase this rate.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>The cities of Boulder, Loveland, and Fort Collins have the highest recycling rates on the Front Range.<\/strong> Aspen and Durango have the best rates in Greater Colorado. A recent state report shows we could increase organics diversion from around 10% of organic materials to 60% by 2036 by adding more collections and processing infrastructure as well as policies that require the diversion of organic material from landfills through donation of useable food and composting of non-edible organic material, similar to the policy the City of Aspen adopted in 2023.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Implement Producer Responsibility for Batteries: <\/strong>Batteries contain various materials, some of which are very valuable. However, when improperly disposed of in the trash or curbside recycling, batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, pose a serious fire hazard. Battery-caused fires in collection trucks, material recovery facilities, and waste facilities are increasingly common, endangering employees, damaging infrastructure, and significantly increasing operational and insurance costs. Adopting a producer responsibility program for batteries would provide funding for appropriate disposal, a mechanism to reduce battery waste, and ensure valuable materials are recovered and recycled.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support Reuse: <\/strong>Reuse offers significant environmental benefits by reducing the need for new products and saving consumers and businesses money. The potential for reuse is vast, spanning many sectors such as reuse\/refill businesses (bulk food, serviceware, etc.), resale markets (thrift\/consignment, used books, gear and cars, auction, pawn, etc.), rental services (cars, bridal, equipment, etc.), and repair services (tailoring\/mending, shoe repair, electronic repair, auto repair, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.salsalabs.org\/policy-updates-2024\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stay tuned for ways you can help build circular economies in Colorado<\/a>, including supporting upcoming legislation for battery producer responsibility in 2025!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Eco-Cycle and CoPIRG Foundation release our 8th edition of the State of Recycling and Composting in Colorado report, revealing early payoffs in waste reduction and recycling despite a growing population.
