Of this, only 32% is recycled or composted. In Colorado, the burden of our waste is much heavier! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2023\/11\/15\/colorado-recycling-rate-plastic-bags-foam-takeout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coloradans produce on average over 5.6 lb of trash per day<\/a>, and of that amount, only 16% is recycled or composted\u2014half the national average! While systemic changes like Colorado\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recyclingforallcoloradans.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Producer Responsibility legislation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/zero-waste-colorado\/plastic-pollution-reduction-act-overview\/\">Plastic Pollution Reduction Act<\/a> are making a difference, individual actions still matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Start by auditing your trash and identifying areas for improvement<\/strong> with Eco-Cycle\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/eco-living-guide-how-to-quit-plastics-workbook\/\">How to Quit Plastics Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) <strong>Save Money<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Zero Waste can lead to big savings! <\/strong>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thrift Shopping<\/strong>: Discover unique finds at thrift stores for a fraction of retail costs. Locate bulk stores near you, or head to the bulk aisles of your local grocery store!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) <strong>Eat Healthier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Avoiding unnecessary waste is a major goal for those striving for Zero Waste, and a lot of that excess comes in the form of food packaging. <strong>Opt for more \u201cunpackaged\u201d foods<\/strong>, such as fruits and vegetables, as well as bulk items like grains, nuts, and seeds. <strong>Go a step further by reducing not only packaging, but also the amount of food that ends up uneaten.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/eco-living\/refuse-and-reduce\/reduce-food-waste\">Try these simple tips for reducing food waste<\/a>, including planning out meals and using up food scraps to make soup broth and smoothies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What you can\u2019t eat, make sure you compost! <\/strong>Composting not only cuts methane emissions from landfills but enriches soil, helping it sequester carbon and combat climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) <strong>Spend More Time Outdoors and Support Your Soil<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Make 2025 the year you start a composting pile at home!<\/strong> When organic waste (food scraps, yard trimmings, etc.) is buried in landfills, methane\u2014a potent greenhouse gas\u2014is released into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/eco-living\/composting-101\/why-compost\">Composting organic waste avoids those methane emissions<\/a>. Some Eco-Leaders take on big projects, and some take on small tasks, but any action makes a big difference in helping you and your community reduce waste.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/get-involved\/volunteer\/\">Sign up to become an Eco-Leader today!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6) <strong>Declutter<\/strong> Mindfully<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Following the holiday festivities, January&#8217;s quieter days can be the perfect time to clear out and clean up. <strong>Here&#8217;s a look at some items commonly purged in the New Year that typically can be recycled<\/strong> (but check your local guidelines to make sure!):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recycle these \u201chard-to-recycle\u201d items at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/services-and-facilities\/charm\/\">Eco-Cycle Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM)<\/a> located at 6400 Arapahoe Rd. in Boulder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Electronics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mattresses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small appliances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White block foam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plastic bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scrap metal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/services-and-facilities\/charm\/what-we-accept\/\">and more<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can add these items to your curbside SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING BIN in Boulder County:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Corrugated cardboard:<\/strong> It might look like nothing special, but this material is the bread and butter of recycling operations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/services-and-facilities\/bcrc\/\">Boulder County Recycling Center<\/a>. Please flatten boxes and remove excess tape.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Newspapers, office paper, and kraft paper:<\/strong> These items are typically recyclable in your curbside bin.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calendars: <\/strong>Paper calendars are a fine addition to your recycling bins. Please remove any plastic covers.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiral notebooks and old planners:<\/strong> These are recyclable without removing the spiral binding, which gets screened out from paper in the remanufacturing process. Please remove plastic or non-paper covers and dividers, however.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See what else can be recycled in Boulder County curbside bins in <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/guides-and-resources\/guides-for-boulder-county\/recycling-guide-boulder-county\/\">Eco-Cycle&#8217;s recycling guidelines<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, prevent the need to declutter by looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/eco-living\/refuse-and-reduce\/zero-waste-at-home\">ways to reduce waste at home<\/a>, including cutting out the biggest \u201cwasters\u201d and swapping in the best Zero Waste \u201cwinners\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However you plan to approach the New Year, we at Eco-Cycle hope that 2025 brings you closer than ever to living in harmony with this beautiful planet.
