Our trash.<\/strong> When sent to landfills, food and other organic materials like paper products, wood, and yard trimmings decompose anaerobically (without oxygen) and release large amounts of methane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The harms caused by methane extend beyond climate impacts. Communities located near landfills, often <a href=\"https:\/\/landfills.edf.org\/#americas-landfills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low-income and predominantly people of color<\/a>, face disproportionate health risks from landfill methane emissions. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/files\/xdjws328\/production\/4820df5770ec505062a6f29d5f6c6f9bb7f31071.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exposure to hazardous air pollutants like benzene and toluene<\/a>, which are linked to respiratory problems and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Championing Stronger Methane Regulations in Colorado<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eco-Cycle is advocating for the adoption of stringent landfill methane regulations in Colorado, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/zero-waste-colorado\/landfill-methane\/\">groups like Industrious Labs, the Environmental Defense Fund, Healthy Air and Water Colorado, and many others<\/a>. This coalition is leading the charge in championing the adoption of <strong>strong, nation-first landfill methane regulations <\/strong>by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).&nbsp;Strong rules would require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Comprehensive landfill gas capture systems,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robust monitoring, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enforceable emissions standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do we need stronger methane regulations?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Industrious Labs&#8217;s report, <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/files\/xdjws328\/production\/4820df5770ec505062a6f29d5f6c6f9bb7f31071.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;The Hidden Cost of Landfills,&#8221;<\/a> highlights that many landfills exceed federal methane limits, with 711 recorded violations across 29 sites. At 48% of these sites, methane levels were higher than reported by operators, indicating significant underreporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Colorado, landfills emitted over <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/files\/xdjws328\/production\/7d9dab2d4fc6d69da5faf75b5bf7e2823518cb57.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6.2 million metric tons of methane in 2022, surpassing emissions from coal mining<\/a>. Communities near landfills, such as those in Commerce City, Fort Collins, and Erie, experience <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/files\/xdjws328\/production\/7d9dab2d4fc6d69da5faf75b5bf7e2823518cb57.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elevated health risks<\/a> due to proximity to these sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Composting: A Scalable, Circular Climate Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the best methane capture systems are a partial fix. A far more impactful&nbsp;solution lies upstream: <strong>reducing organic discards generated<\/strong>, <strong>composting what we can\u2019t avoid<\/strong>, <strong>and<\/strong> <strong>applying compost to landscapes to build healthy soils that draw down and store carbon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Reduce Organic Waste<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drawdown.org\/programs\/drawdown-labs\/deep-dives\/food-waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prevention is the most effective strategy<\/a>. This includes upstream interventions like improving food supply chains, educating consumers, and creating efficient paths to food redistribution.
