Our <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/boulder-county-model\/zero-waste-programs\/schools-programs\/environmental-education-programs\/\">School Recycling and Environmental Education Program<\/a> helps students sort waste, recycle, and explore conservation through hands-on classroom lessons. The small, daily choices students learn to make\u2014like what they do with a banana peel or juice box\u2014can ripple out to homes, neighborhoods, and communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental Education: The Numbers Add Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eco-Cycle is helping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvsd.org\/\">schools in Boulder Valley<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svvsd.org\/\">St. Vrain Valley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adams12.org\/\">Adams 12 Five Star<\/a> School Districts make a big environmental impact through education and everyday actions. During the 2024\u201325 school year, we:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reached <strong>29,466 participants<\/strong> during 1<strong>,268 presentations and field trips<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delivered <strong>174 presentations<\/strong> to Title 1 schools and <strong>118 presentations<\/strong> in Spanish or bilingual format.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redistributed <strong>4,394 children\u2019s books<\/strong> throughout Boulder, Broomfield, and Weld Counties, giving new life to beloved stories through the CHaRMed Books Program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycled <strong>474,311 pounds<\/strong> of material across schools in the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD)\u2014<em>with even more impact coming from St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) and Adams 12 Five Star, data pending<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s hundreds of metric tons of CO\u2082 emissions avoided, thousands of gallons of water saved by students through daily Zero Waste hands-on practice!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scroll through the full <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/e5ba76080ff447b4a9cb4b1ca3681544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024\u20132025 annual report for Eco-Cycle&#8217;s School Recycling and Education Program here<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green Star Schools<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Are Leading the Way<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"920\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kim-and-student.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25020 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 792px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 792\/920;width:250px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kim-and-student.jpg 792w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kim-and-student-258x300.jpg 258w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kim-and-student-768x892.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kim-and-student-108x125.jpg 108w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/our-programs\/boulder-county-model\/zero-waste-programs\/schools-programs\/green-star-schools\/\">Green Star Schools program<\/a> builds on Eco-Cycle\u2019s School Recycling and Environmental Education Program by going deeper\u2014bringing composting to cafeterias, strengthening recycling systems, and finding creative ways to cut waste at every level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This matters because the scale of school waste is staggering. Nationally, schools generate an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/stories\/food-waste-warriors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">530,000 tons of food waste each year<\/a>\u2014equal to 1.9 million metric tons of CO\u2082 emissions and nearly 21 billion gallons of wasted water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Star Schools are setting a new standard. In the 2024\u20132025 school year alone, <strong>68 schools<\/strong> (across three school districts), and <strong>38,000 students and staff<\/strong> took part in the program, <strong>reaching waste diversion rates of up to 67%<\/strong>.
