In the United States, restaurants distribute nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/upstreamsolutions.org\/reuse-wins-report\">1 trillion single-use food service items every year<\/a>, costing the industry an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/upstreamsolutions.org\/blog\/reuse-wins-report\">$24 billion annually<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, a significant portion of those items go straight from the take-out bag to be stored in a drawer or thrown in the trash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A new proposed bill, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/SB26-146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 26-146<\/a><strong>, would make single-use items available by request only, cutting costs, reducing trash, and giving customers more choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.everyaction.com\/hPwRuAkqXEqZZ5_WuJMtHA2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ask your state senator to support this bill<\/a><strong>\u2014it takes less than one minute!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Simple Shift with Big Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/SB26-146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 26-146<\/a> offers a straightforward solution: instead of automatically including single-use items with every order, restaurants would provide them only upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Single-use items are resource-intensive from start to finish\u2014requiring oil, gas, trees, water, and energy to produce and transport, only to be used for minutes (if at all). This common-sense policy tackles that waste at the source while delivering real benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For businesses:<\/strong> Lower supply costs and less wasted inventory\u2014often saving hundreds to thousands of dollars annually<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For customers:<\/strong> Fewer unwanted items and more choice and control over what you receive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For communities:<\/strong> Reduced litter and an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5f218f677f1fdb38f06cebcb\/t\/5f282d24acbc6f5e2a38560c\/1596468523446\/Overbrook+Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1 billion in taxpayer savings<\/a><strong> <\/strong>on cleanup costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For the environment<\/strong>: Less waste, less pollution, fewer resources used, and cleaner recycling and composting systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It also builds on policies already working in other states and Colorado communities\u2014helping make \u201cby request only\u201d the new normal statewide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take Action in Under One Minute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If passed, SB26-146 would align everyday systems with common sense: If you need it, you can still get it.
