And all these challenges are united by one relatively easy fix&mdash;compost. Landfilling our organic discards like food scraps and yard debris creates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/assessment-report\/ar5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">methane, a greenhouse gas that is far more potent and dangerous in the short term than carbon dioxide<\/a>. It makes no sense that we are knowingly and unnecessarily creating these greenhouse emissions. Instead, we can collect locally-generated organic discards, transform them into compost using nature&rsquo;s own process, and apply the finished compost on our local degraded agricultural and urban landscapes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this one, simple strategy, we can grow much healthier, drought-resistant plants, return nutrients to our food, retain moisture in the soil, and replenish the soil&rsquo;s ability to draw down and safely store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to actually reverse climate change.
