Things like plastic checkout bags, wads of napkins, plastic forks and spoons, extra soy sauce packets, disposable chopsticks, paper coffee cups . . . do we really <em>need <\/em>all this stuff?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For most of us, the answer is &ldquo;no.&rdquo; But in the name of serving the customer with the utmost convenience, establishments will hand out these products whether we ask for them or not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Convenience, but at what cost?<\/h2>\n<p>We&rsquo;ve become so accustomed to being on the receiving end of these items that we don&rsquo;t stop to wonder &ldquo;How was this product made?&rdquo; or &ldquo;What&rsquo;s going to happen to it after I use it?&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, most of the single-use disposables that make their way into American trash bins have a dark history and a sad future: They&rsquo;re mostly made from finite, nonrenewable resources (think natural gas and petroleum).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The production and disposal of single-use items, especially plastics, are clogging up our waterways and oceans, killing wildlife, adversely impacting our climate, and taking tremendous tolls on ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>We Don&rsquo;t Need to Litter Our World with Disposable Trash<\/h2>\n<p>Here are two simple, Zero Waste actions against disposable waste you can take each day: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refusing them in the first place and c<\/span>hoosing reuse over single-use items.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Refuse to Accept Garbage You Don&#8217;t Want or Need<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REFUSE<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to accept single-use disposable items and let restaurants and businesses know to please not include these items before we receive them, we&rsquo;re taking a stand against a system designed to create trash. We are sending a message to establishments that consumers don&rsquo;t want to be given garbage they may not want or need, and doing our part to reduce our own waste footprint.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Choose to Reuse<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In place of single-use disposables, we can choose to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REUSE<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can be as simple as choosing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to use an item only once&mdash;such as salvaging a glass jar from the recycling because it&rsquo;s still useful to you&mdash;or can mean investing in a product specifically designed for reuse, such as reusable napkins, utensils, straws, and to-go coffee cups (bonus points if you acquire it secondhand!). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upstreamsolutions.org\/reuse-vs-single-use-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that these &ldquo;reusables&rdquo;&mdash;sometimes called &ldquo;durables&rdquo;&mdash;are better for the environment than their single-use counterparts.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even though reusable items need to be washed, they are demonstrated to consume fewer resources, including water, than comparable single-use items over their life cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Go for Zero Waste today by changing your habits to include durable goods!&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Refuse Paper Coffee Cups<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13160 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-coffee-cups-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"298\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-coffee-cups-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-coffee-cups.png 680w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/298;\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/magazine\/2014\/04\/02\/why-paper-cups-just-aren-greener\/W3TIBJ9dff8INlumPQvHSI\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">They&#8217;re generally made from trees, not recycled paper,<\/a> and in most cases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/dioxin\/learn-about-dioxin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they are bleached white with chlorine, a process that releases dioxin,<\/a> one of the most toxic chemicals on the planet. <a href=\"https:\/\/earth911.com\/recycling-guide\/how-to-recycle-paper-cups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paper coffee cups are usually not recyclable<\/a>, and when they are disposed of in a landfill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/animalsandnature\/methane-vs-carbon-dioxide-a-greenhouse-gas-showdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they emit methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide<\/a>. (Compostable coffee cups exist, but they&#8217;re certainly not the norm.)<\/p>\n<p>The use of disposable coffee cups is prolific: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40547187\/starbucks-generates-an-astronomical-amount-of-waste-can-it-stop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starbucks alone produces 4 billion each year<\/a> (and what&#8217;s worse is <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/stories\/2018\/starbucks-and-closed-loop-to-develop-recyclable-compostable-cup-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this number could potentially be as high as 6 billion, according to a Starbucks release<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3>Instead, REUSE . . . <strong>Invest in a stainless steel reusable mug to keep your drink warm <em>and <\/em>reduce&nbsp;your paper coffee cup waste.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Refuse Polystyrene Foam (aka Styrofoam) To-Go Containers and Cups<\/h4>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13168 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-styrofoam.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"298\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-styrofoam.png 680w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-styrofoam-300x199.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/298;\" \/><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Polystyrene is bad for you, the planet, and the people who produce it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/styrene\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/styrene\/index.cfm\">Its basic component, styrene, is a possible human carcinogen, a hazardous air pollutant, and can cause nervous system impairments among industry workers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/may\/28\/plastics-toxic-america-chemicals-packaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/may\/28\/plastics-toxic-america-chemicals-packaging\">Styrene can leach from containers into your food<\/a>. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthday.org\/fact-sheet-single-use-plastics\/#_ftn10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.earthday.org\/fact-sheet-single-use-plastics\/#_ftn10\">polystyrene recycling is not widely available, and it never biodegrades<\/a>; it simply breaks down into tinier and tinier pieces, polluting the environment and harming the animals that mistake it for food.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead, REUSE . . . <strong>Bring your own food containers with you when you go out to eat!<br \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Refuse Bottled Water<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13170 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-water-bottles.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"298\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-water-bottles.png 680w, https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Thumb-water-bottles-300x199.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/298;\" \/><span style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert; font-weight: revert; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">This single-use item is a poster child for unnecessary waste. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2013\/10\/28\/241419373\/how-much-water-actually-goes-into-making-a-bottle-of-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Six to seven times more water goes into manufacturing and filling bottles, filtering water, and cleaning the bottling facility than goes into the bottle itself.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But water isn&rsquo;t the only resource wasted: It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil per year to produce the plastic for bottles.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/160420-bottled-water-sales-record-high-despite-environmental-opposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the US alone, we&#8217;re consuming 1.7 billion bottles of water each week<\/a>, and the final kicker is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/plastics-material-specific-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/plastics-material-specific-data\">less than 30% of these bottles are recycled<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead, REUSE . . . Plastic bags are made from nonrenewable fossil fuels, <a href=\"https:\/\/earth911.com\/business-policy\/video-plastic-bag-recycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/earth911.com\/business-policy\/video-plastic-bag-recycling\/\">fewer are recycled<\/a>, and more are used&mdash;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthday.org\/fact-sheet-how-much-disposable-plastic-we-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.earthday.org\/fact-sheet-how-much-disposable-plastic-we-use\/\">nearly 2 million every minute!<\/a>&nbsp;It&rsquo;s a lose-lose any way you look at it.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead, REUSE . . . <strong>BYO(Bag). <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Keep it in your car\/bike\/backpack\/purse so you don&rsquo;t forget it, and even if you do&mdash;don&rsquo;t be too hard on yourself! Bring your own utensil set.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Find a to-go utensil kit, get yourself a deluxe spork, buy some used dinnerware from your local thrift store&mdash;or simply grab a reusable fork, spoon, and any other utensil you need from your kitchen drawer&mdash;wrap it in a reusable napkin, and call it a &ldquo;kit.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><br \/>Once you get in the habit of reuse, you&rsquo;ll be surprised how easy it is and the difference it makes in the amount of garbage you prevent and the important message it sends to businesses!<\/p> \n\n
