We&rsquo;re here to help.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for guidelines for recycling or composting at an apartment or condominium complex, <\/span>wondering why your apartment or condominium complex doesn&rsquo;t have recycling or compost bins, or are finding a lot of trash in the bins and want to do something about it, Eco-Cycle can help.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recycling and composting at apartment and condo complexes can be more challenging than at single-family homes for multiple reasons. Individual residents cannot sign up for services (that is done by the property <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manager<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and trash, recycling, and compost containers in common collection areas often suffer from &ldquo;the tragedy of the commons,&rdquo; creating contamination issues. It can also be unclear as to which materials go where, and these common areas can lead to problematic illegal dumping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to overcome these challenges is for a caring resident to volunteer to work with Eco-Cycle to connect their fellow residents to educational information.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About Recycling Services for Apartments and Condos&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the City of Boulder, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bouldercolorado.gov\/services\/universal-zero-waste-ordinance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal Zero Waste Ordinance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires that recycling, compost, and trash services are provided at all multi-unit complexes. Signage with guidelines for each stream of material are required to be posted along with each corresponding bin or dumpster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere in Boulder County, services are not mandated, but many property managers opt to provide these services to residents who increasingly expect to be able to recycle and compost where they live.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What to Do If You Don&rsquo;t Have Recycling Services at Your Complex<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re finding that you do NOT have services, f<\/span>irst make sure <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to confirm that there truly are no services available<\/span>. Walk around the property and check out each dumpster enclosure for recycling and\/or composting bins. Oftentimes there are recycling bins in some enclosures and not others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>If you&rsquo;re sure there&rsquo;s no recycling service, talk to your property manager or homeowners association:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If your complex is within the City of Boulder, both recycling and composting services are required by ordinance.<\/strong> Contact your property manager to discuss coming into compliance. If you encounter a problem, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/user.govoutreach.com\/boulder\/support.php?cmd=shell&amp;goparms=classificationId%3D30051%26caseType%3DComplaint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact the City of Boulder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>If your complex is located outside the City of Boulder, ask your property manager or HOA if they have looked into providing recycling and\/or composting services<\/strong>. What are the costs and barriers or concerns?<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li>If your property manager or HOA is still not interested in providing recycling services, <a href=\"mailto:volunteer@ecocycle.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get in touch with Eco-Cycle staff<\/a> about how to overcome your community&rsquo;s specific barriers.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Get your neighbors involved.<\/strong> Ask your neighbors to sign a petition supporting adding recycling and composting to your community. You may need to show the property manager or the HOA that there is strong support for adding recycling and\/or composting service. <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/..\/content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/MFC-Eco-Leader_Sample-Petition.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download a sample petition.<\/a><br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Make a proposal.<\/strong> Present a proposal to your property manager or HOA board. You will need to do some research contacting different haulers to get estimates in order to prepare a proposal of costs and services.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What to Do If Your Complex Has Recycling and Composting but You Want to Help Your Neighbors Do Better<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Post recycling and composting guidelines above bins.<\/strong> If you have recycling and\/or composting services at your complex but the bins are contaminated with stuff that isn&#8217;t recyclable or compostable, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/recycling-guidelines\/\">download our recycling guidelines<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/ecocycle.org\/resources\/curbside-compost-guidelines\/\">curbside composting guidelines<\/a> and post them within the enclosure and in common areas in your building or complex to help your neighbors know the correct materials to place in each bin.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribute a&nbsp; sample letter you <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>to fellow residents,<\/strong> along with recycling and composting guidelines. Working with your property manager or HOA, send out a letter to residents notifying them your community is working toward Zero Waste and that you need everyone to participate.
